Pencil Mason Jar Cover Teacher Gift- Free Crochet Pattern

Y’all, this summer came at us hard! I mean like holy cow is it seriously August already kind of hard. I am sure many of the moms reading can agree this summer just flew by. Or it was too long; some might think both! In our house though, it was gone in a moment. Maybe because it was jam packed with events and trips and all kinds of fun, or maybe because I’ve been silently dreading what was to come.

Ok, I’ll admit it. My son will be going to Preschool this year. For the first time he will go to school, and for the whole day. On one hand I am so excited for him. He is such a social butterfly and thrives with the opportunity to make new friends and try new things. On the other I am secretly holding back my tears already. Seriously, his first day is going to come and he is going to whoosh straight through those doors no problem and I am going to be left bawling in the parking lot because my baby is all grown up and ready for school on his own.

Ugh, enough emotional crud; back to the crochet! So to prepare for the new year (and partially to keep my emotional mind busy) I decided on making a cute little back to school gift for A’s new teacher. Here’s to hoping she doesn’t have a billion of these and secretly hates those crafty gifting moms.

It’s fairly straight-forward and can be done pretty quickly (just in time to make real fast if you forgot!). And the best part, I even through in a printable freebie to attach to it. Start the year off right with a little token of your gratitude for putting up with your kid in the coming year (or taking care of them like you would if they were still home; I know Mama it could go either way depending on the day).

Pencil Mason Jar Cover

Materials Used:
G or 4.00 MM Hook
1 Ball Worsted Weight Yarn in Gold, Silver, and Pink
Tapestry Needle

Stitches Used:
CH – Chain
DC – Double Crochet
INC – Increase
SLST – Slip Stitch

Notes:
This pattern is written using American crochet terms.
Finished project is made to fit a Wide Mouth Pint Mason Jar.
To make smaller or larger try varying the hook size and yarn weight. You will want a stitch that does not let fiberfill come through. 
In this pattern the CH 2 at the end of each round does not count as a stitch. Each round ends with a SLST in the rows first DC to join the round.

Body (Starting in Pink)
Row 1: Create a magic circle, CH 2 and DC 10 into the circle then pull tight. You may also use a CH 3 and 10 SC into the first chain then pull tight. Join with a SLST in the first DC. You will do this throughout the pattern at the end of each round. CH 2 (10)
Row 2: INC 10, join, CH 2 (20)
Row 3: *DC, INC* 10 times, join, CH 2 (30)
Row 4: *DC 2, INC* 10 times, join, CH 2 (40)
Row 5-7: DC 40, join, CH 2 (40)
Switch to Silver
Row 8: DC 40, join, CH 2 (40)
Switch to Gold
Row 9-19: DC 40, join, CH 2 (40)
Row 20: DC 40, join, finish off and weave in ends.

I used a bit of black yarn and tied it around between the two grooves at the top of the jar and tied on the tag there.
